This is spelled out deep within the EULA of the MS applications but nobody ever bothers to read 'em. Installing MS Office, Windows (Live) Essentials and a few other MS applications will (a) enable/turn on Automatic Updating (if it had previously been disabled/turned off) and (b) change the AU setting to PS: I can guarantee you that I'll have MANY more questions for you!

Did you install MS Office (any version) or one or more Windows (Live) Essentials applications (e.g., Windows Live Mail Windows Photo Gallery & Movie Maker) just before "Windows decided to install over 100 updates by itself?" ĥ. They all now say installed on, and the setting for automatic updates is confirmed.Ĥ. No updates released within the past 3 months are presently installed or you just installed the last 3 months' worth of updates?Īfter rebooting my laptop, Windows decided to install over 100 updates by itself.

Updates after that were carefully screened by release date so that nothing newer than 3 months was installed, and obviously manually.I have just only moved up from Win7 to Win8.1 on my two computers in the last 8 months. I thought he was just confused and talking about Win10, but it could be possible MS has just decided to jam updates down our throats no matter Past on all versions, which is of course wrong, so he started sounding like he really didn't know when he was doing. He also said that MS has always done this in the Of course it could always be MS starting to pull sneaky behavior.Īlso, on a side note, the entry level tech at MS said something like if the user is 'notified' that updates are waiting to be installed, and the user takes no action, the system will install them instead. I'm just wondering if this is a common occurrence or not.

Used to Windows 7 at least notifying me that new updates are available, but I have not seen that reminder bubble at all on either my 8.1 laptop or 8.1 workhorse system since I started using them. I have just only moved up from Win7 to Win8.1 on my two computers in the last 8 months, about the time that 10 was released, and I only did that because I was upgrading my MB/Processor anyway on the main system and jamming huge amounts of memory in it. I thought it was one of those instances where MS thinks in its infinite wisdom it needs to crowbar in a single critical update which fixes a really big screw up hole for them without asking, but this morning upon boot up I've got 104 new updates. I went to shut down last night and it said 'Installing updates'. I use it only on business trips let's say three times a month. In fact, this laptop is only a backup to my main system.

No settings were changed at all since then. Updates after that were carefully screened by release date so that nothing newer than 3 months was installed, and obviously manually. The absolute first thing I did on it was set the automatic updates setting during initial setup to not download anything, but to notify only. This laptop has been in use since new for eight months. I'm not an IT tech, but I am at the level where I'm taking care of 30 computers for friends, family and co-workers for decades and I've been ripping apart/building PCs since the days of DOS.
